How Weather Affects Us (Carmen's project & presentation)
DFW airport is a good example of the many ways that weather can affect people.
On August 2, 1985, the crew of Delta Flight 191 tried to land at DFW during a thunderstorm. Something called “wind shear” pushed the plane down to the ground before it could land safely.
The plane crash killed a man in a car and 137 people on the plane.
Now airplanes are not allowed to land in thunderstorms.
DFW has 2000 flights a day—1000 arrivals, 1000 departures.
These flights carry 150,000 passengers a day.
Sometimes the passengers flights get delayed, so people are late.
Sometimes flights get cancelled, so people get stuck at the airport and have to stay in the terminals or in hotels.
Also, 75,000 people work at DFW airport.
When there is bad weather,
Some can’t work (like pilots or flight attendants).
Some have to come early or stay late (if they work in the terminals).
Some have to answer their Blackberries and be on TV talking about the weather (like Daddy)!
My dad is in Washington, D.C. right now talking to congressmen and people from other airports about how to help people when flights are delayed and cancelled.
