Vacation
That is what they call the summer for teachers. But so far, that is not a fair description of our summer! I'm still hoping we can figure out some kind of getaway. Paloma is still nursing usually twice a day, so an adults-only trip is out for now.
Most of our family is out of town this week and it feels weird knowing that.
David’s parents are at the family reunion in Mexico. They weren’t planning to go, but one of Abuelo’s nephews wanted them to come so much that he sent them plane tickets! It’s held in odd-numbered years in Arandas, Jalisco, where David has over 100 cousins on his Dad’s side. (We went in ’97 and ’99, but haven’t been since we’ve had kids.)
Allison, Bill, and Zoe are in Florida where they are visiting Bill’s sister. My folks joined them yesterday and will stay 5 days, then bring Zoe back with them.
Amy is doing a girls’ weekend in Port Aransas, and Brian leaves on a business trip before she gets back on Sunday.
We still haven’t figured out what we’re doing for vacation. Originally, this spring, my whole family was talking about trying to do a beach thing together, so we applied for passports (in April) that haven’t come yet. Then everyone changed their minds about Mexico, so we never decided on anything. But now, since the State Dept changed its guidelines, the passports are not stopping us from going to Cancun. The prices might, however. I was looking at all-inclusive deals on Funjet, but there is only one hotel that I can find that allows us to have all 3 kids in a room, so there’s not a whole lot of choice there. And Sissy told me that the last time she used Funjet, they lost her bags and not only did she never get them, but they never compensated her one penny afterwards, either!
David found a pretty good deal to San Jose where we could visit his sister Gabi & family, but that would change our vacation dates and make it shorter. The kids would have a blast there, but I hate not to stay a week if we're going to spend a lot on airfare to get there.
Either of those options will require us to spend more than we really should, given that we have to pay the deductible on a new roof and David insists we need to buy a new Mac mini to work as our server here. (We were all at the Apple store this week, salivating over the iphones and other things...)
So maybe we should consider a road trip. Any ideas, blogosphere?
I asked Carmen where she’d like to go most in the world, and she ranked her preferences this way:
Disneyworld
Paris
New York
Pennsylvania (we had talked about going to Hershey, the Crayola factory & Sesame Place, but the airfare is prohibitive)
But honestly, the kids are easy to please. I said the other day, maybe we shouldn't go anywhere until I've blogged about last year's vacation. It was just too big a topic to ever get to. I hope we remember enough to save a few memories eventually!

San Antonio!! :)
I'll second that! The Alamo, Sea World, Riverwalk, Tower of the Americas, children's museum...
Of course, we're always up for a trip to Austin, too. Easy road trip, plenty to do, favorite restaurants to visit, lots of burnt orange stuff to buy (OK, so that last one wouldn't tempt you!). We love Zilker Park: the walking trails, the train, Barton Springs. The bats are cool to see, and of course, Ryan makes us walk all over the Capitol every time.
