A current post!

We had a normal, busy Saturday that started out with TWO 9 o'clock soccer games. I skipped breakfast because we were in a hurry.

It looked like a beautiful day, but it was 51 degrees without factoring in the freezing, blustery wind. Since David had to coach Gabe's team, Paloma, Eva & I went to watch Carmen's game. We had blankets with us but I was still miserable. Don't worry, Eva had the best situation all bundled up in the stroller.

After soccer I went to chop birth announcements, which took until lunch time; David worked on the yard (web worms are back!). David, Gabriel and Paloma joined us for lunch, but while we were waiting, Carmen looked at the dogs available for adoption out in front of the pet store next door. (And we had to explain why getting a pet now is out of the question.)

I wasn't very hungry so I ordered a baked potato off the kids' menu.

We worked on the announcements again at home and before I knew it, it was dinner time. David made a nice meal: steak, asparagus, sweet potatoes and French bread. But while he was cooking, I was starting to get chills. I also realized I had no appetite and that I didn't want to smell the food.

I sat at dinner, but didn't eat anything. By the kids' bedtime, it was obvious that I was sick.

Also, Eva seemed to be in pain. She nursed and nursed, which was difficult because I hadn't had any fuel in hours. She couldn't go to sleep or stay asleep if she did nod off. In her 5 week life, she'd only had one other night like this. She's usually such a great sleeper!

Once the kids went to bed, I got under two down comforters but still felt cold. David and I watched August Rush (which was really good, by the way, and it's probably best I watched it in a detached, stupefied haze of sickness or I would have been weeping like I did in Juno) and after Eva nursed, I'd have him try to get her to burp. Nothing worked. We even tried a pacifier, which Eva hasn't used since the hospital. That lasted only a few minutes, and it did occur to me that I didn't feel good enough to get a picture.

Around midnight I said I was almost desperate enough to drive around with her to get her to sleep. David enthusiastically volunteered to do that, bundled her up in the car seat and took off.

And what did I do with my half hour of peace?

Shaved my legs. Pitiful. Yes, I shaved my legs. The chills I'd been having had made them feel painfully prickly! Weird, I know.

So that was about 24 hours ago. I'm feeling much better now, but all I've eaten is jello and crackers, so I still don't have much energy.

This morning David left for Maryland, and I wanted a picture of him saying goodbye to the kids, but I could not summon the energy to make that happen.

Paloma said, "I want to go with you!" So sweet. But no drama out of Carmen this time. She is taking on the responsible big sister role very well.

I asked her to get Paloma dressed this morning and she called out, "How many months is Paloma? This skirt says 24 months."

I told her that was fine; I didn't try to explain that P can still wear some 24-month sized things although she's 2 1/2.

Gabriel is also looking forward to being responsible: he plans to "make breakfast" this week. (Pour the cereal and milk. He already "makes" drinks at dinner a lot, but this adds excitement for him, apparently.)

All three kids helped with the birth announcements this evening, but after stuffing the envelopes, Gabe and Paloma were done. Carmen kept working.

"Way to stick to it, Carmen," I said, complimenting her for finishing sealing the birth announcements all by herself.

"That's a good joke, Mommy," she said, having to say it twice to make me realize the joke.

And another funny moment today was when I told Paloma to get her shoes, then said, "Nevermind, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it."

"Where is the bridge?" Paloma asked. And I told her it was a metaphorical bridge. She didn't pursue her line of questioning any further.

This reminds me of what she said in the tub last night: "Gigi doesn't have stairs at her house. Gigi needs to buy some stairs and an attic."

"Why?" I asked her.

"So she can go upstairs and get undressed." (What we tell the kids to do after dinner every night.)

This led to a conversation about whether Hidy & Gigi bathe or shower.

One more thing: today Eva must have felt much better. Since birth, I've only seen a handful of smiles, but today I saw several!

Amanda, I was going to back-blog by posting things as month-day-2009 so they'd be at the top, (which I used to do) but Blogger has changed that--now the posts won't show until that date! So I'll see what I can do. If the posts are listed in Previous Posts, I won't put a link, but if I do older ones than that, I'll put in links like this and this. Will that satisfy you? I just hate to get out of order. Basically I have a lot of new posts April 1-8 so far.

Amy, your friend's friend is pictured in that last link.

Your comment makes me wonder if you saw this one!
